Five Signs That You Need To Buy A New Mattress

How do you know it’s time to change your mattress?

So you are exhausted after a long day at work. You go to bed but simply cannot get yourself to sleep. You toss and turn, switch off the lights, draw the curtains and do everything you possibly can but to no avail. Does that sound familiar? Perhaps it’s time to consider changing your mattress…

A mattress most certainly does not last forever. So the key is to understand the subtle and the not-so-subtle hints; for instance, disturbed sleep, back pain when you wake up every morning and visible damage to the mattress are some of the signs that indicate that it’s time to toss out the old mattress and find a new, more comfortable one. On an average, you have to change your mattress every six years or so. The reason being that as your body ages and changes (weight, stress, etc), you will need something that suits you at every stage. So while a softer bed that sinks when you lie down on it may have been comfortable when you were young, as you grow older, you might want a firmer mattress.

However, in most cases, it’s difficult to guess exactly when it’s time to change your mattress. Here are a few pointers to help you.

Disturbed Sleep

Do you wake up feeling like you haven’t had enough sleep although you slept for more than eight hours? If you find that the quality of your sleep is better when you are sleeping on a bed different from yours, it could be time to shift to a new mattress.

Body Ache

If you wake up with a back ache – particularly your lower back, or a headache and general stiffness, it could be your mattress. In addition, if you tend to sneeze a lot when you are in bed, your mattress either needs a whole lot of cleaning or it needs to be replaced.

Damage to the Mattress

If you notice some wear and tear on your mattress or if you feel the springs and coils inside piercing out, it doesn’t leave you with much choice but to change the mattress completely. If your bed creaks a lot while you sit or move, it’s best to get your mattress checked because if the bed frame doesn’t offer ample support, your mattress could get damaged.

Uneven Surface

Always remember to flip your mattress around every once in a while – say, once in six months or so – to ensure that the wear and tear is even. But despite diligently rotating your mattress, there could be chances of the edges sagging, causing you to move to the centre of the bed for comfort. Time for a new mattress.

Pest Attack

If you have a bad case of bed bugs or a recent pest attack, it is a good idea to consider changing your mattress to be on the safer side, although changing the cover or casing of the mattress should suffice if it’s not too bad.
